Hunting in the South River Area
Deer Lake Lodge

As stated in the introduction, local people in this region hosted affluent American and Canadian hunters at hunting lodges. The hunters would pay for lodging, home-cooked meals, and often guide services from local hunters.

William Detta Sr. built Deer Lake Lodge in the 1920s, on the land of his parent's homestead. There was eleven bedrooms, living room, pantry and store room. The lodge was filled with men during hunting season. William's family lived at an attached house and hosted the hunters. The first picture to the right shows the lodge in all its glory, with its freshly painted exterior. The next two images show the lodge well after it closed, decades later.
