At this time the most popular rifle used for hunting deer or moose was lever-action rifles. The hunter uses their hand to activate a lever which pushes the spent cartridge out of the action and pushes a new cartridge into the action. The two most prolific makers of lever-action rifles were Winchester and Marlin. Small game could be hunted with small caliber rifles, or more usual, shotguns. The most used shotguns at this time were double-barreled shotguns. In this picture we see a variety of rifles being held by the men.
