Camp X specialized in training recruits for covert operations. At the camp, recruits completed 10 weeks of training where they learned a variety of skills including sabotage techniques, lock picking, explosives training, radio communications, the art of silent killing, and unarmed combat. Both men and women were recruited to work and train at Camp X.

Along with training secret agents, Camp X was also at the center of wartime communication and was home to a telecommunications relay station called Hydra. Established in May 1942 by Benjamin DeForest Bayly, Hydra sent and received Allied radio and telegraph signals from around the world and was valuable for both coding and decoding important information.

Many women who were recruited to work at Camp X worked in the communications room. Evelyn Davis (nee Jamieson) worked as a communications officer at Camp X. She was born in 1923 on a farm just north of Cobourg. She was stationed at Camp X from 1944-1946. While working at Camp X, Evelyn met her husband, Lee Davis, who worked as a radio operator.
