Best known for his wartime codename, Intrepid, Sir William Stephenson was instrumental in establishing Camp X.
Sir William Stephenson was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1896. After serving as a fighter pilot in WWI, Stephenson’s role in WWII was much more covert. After providing intelligence about Hitler’s Third Reich in Germany, Stephenson was appointed head of the British Security Coordination (BSC), which was a branch of the British Secret Intelligence Service. In this role, he established Camp X, a secret spy training facility that was used to train recruits for covert operations overseas.
In 1945, Stephenson received a Knighthood for his espionage work during the war. Stephenson died on January 31, 1989, and he was buried in a secret ceremony at St. John’s Church in Bermuda.
