Camp X was initially created to link communications between Britain and the United States. So why was Whitby chosen as the location?
Whitby stood out because it offered both isolation and convenience. It was a remote site, yet only 30 miles straight across from the BSC Headquarters in New York. This made it an ideal location for bouncing radio signals from across the Allied network. It was also only 5 miles from Defense Industries Limited (located in Ajax) which was the largest armaments manufacturing facility in North America.
Other important strategic locations were also nearby, including the German Prisoner of War Camp in Bowmanville (Camp 30), the Canadian Pacific Railway, and the Oshawa Airport, which at the time was a Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) Commonwealth air training school.
