Each returning Serviceman was also nresented with a Canadian, $5.00 gold piece by the ladies These gold coins are just about the same size as todays one-cent coin, indeed one would have to look twice to pick out the gold piece from .a handful of shiny new cents. gHowever, in 1918 the cents {were as big as todays fifty cent piece. Assuming that the gold $5.00 coins were new when they were given to the returning servicemen, if they had been carefully kept their value would range from 3250 to 3850 depending on the date. Minted only forâ€"three years, today they sell for: 1912..worn $145...new $250 1913..worn $145...new $260 1914..worn $400...new 3850 There were about 32 of these gold coins presented at the party. One wonders how many of them are still with the original owners or this heirs..or even in the lNewboro area today.
