Several hundred people attended the servic hearing held by Ontario Telephone Service Commission in Kingston recently. Subscrib ers of Community Telephone from the North 'Leeds area, Inverary, Perth Road, Newbqu and Tamworth were present to express their views regarding the proposed rate increases in telephone service. Both written briefs and oral presentations were accepted by the Commission. Proposed price increases range from 40% to 130% and it was felt that the size of the increase was not in keeping with the curâ€" rent era of wage and price controls. Many people cited examples where poor telephone service created a serious hazard problem in the community. School representatives indâ€" icated it was often difficult to reach homes in times of emergency. Volunteer fire departments have experienced difficulty in reaching volunteer fire men in times of emergency. In one case, it was reported that one gentleman actually put out the fire himself and drove down to the fire station to tell them, only to find out that the fire department had not yet managed to get through to all volunteer firemen. Concern was expressed about an outdated and unfair mileage rate which may have applied in the horse and buggy era but certainly had little relevance today. Also many people put forward demands for larger calling area so that subscribers would be able to call all municipal ofâ€" ficials, schools, doctors and other ess- ential services without paying long dist- ance rates. Many briefs suggested that telephone rates should be reduced rather than increased to reflect the current quality of service received. Amongst those making presentations at the hearing were Mr. Dan Delaney, on behalf of the Village of Newboro; Mr. Pat McManus on we.nul_i t LULAybLLLKâ€"LA L‘LLL‘JK’LLH ‘A. AIVLLIL Leeds; Mr. Whitney on behalf of the Seeley's Bay Chamber of Commerce; and Mr. Earl McEwen, MLA for Frontenac- Addington. Over 50 oral presentations were heard during the course of the meeting. It is clear that subscribers of Commâ€" unity Telephone Service are concerned about the poor quality of service they receive and about the high rates that they are expected to pay already. It remains to be seen just what the Telâ€" ephone Commission will decide about the application by Community Telephone for a rate increase. No doubt we will all be waiting impatiently for that decision. LEEDS CHINA PAINTERS announce a SEMINAR FOR BEGINNERS 30 brurs Mon. July 11th to Fri.
