The Channel was completely excavated by hand using picks and shovels and the soil re- moved with wheelâ€"barrows. Rock was drilled by hand using rock Chisels and sledge hammers, blown apart with gunâ€" powder and removed with muscle power. In those days a labourer could earn about two shillings and Sixpence a day. A carpenter earned five shillings daily while a skilled stonemason got seven shillings a day. Men of Colonel By's 7th Company of the Royal Sappers and Miners, which landed in Newboro in 1829, probably were paid under a shilling a day. The troops and civilians would have been paid with British money, the coins of which would carry the head of George IV who ruled when the canal construction started and of William IV who was ruling when the canal was comâ€" pleted. A halfcrown piece of Geo IV dated 1828 or 1829 in reasonable condition would cost in the area of $50. today. E l l l i t g. l l E z i NEWBORO COUNCIL NEWS The regular meeting of the Village of Newboro was held on Nov. 2, 1978 at 8:00 p.m. Present were E. Bresee, R.A. Taylor with K. Rasmussin in the chair. Absent were D. Delaney due to illness and T. Landon. D.S. Burtch attended the meeting for instructions. He asked that he be paid for damage done by youth groups 6 (six) months ago. He had not been paid as yet. . The matter was discussed by Council and on a motion by R.A. Taylor and E. Bresee, it was agreed that D.S. Burtch would be paid $15.00 for repairs to the wall of the Library room. The council will collect from the youth group before they use the hall again. The youth group is to be supervised by an adult and the suâ€" pervisor is to sign a form stating ' that he or she is responsible for all damage done by anybody, before the hall is opened. There can be little doubt that some of these tokens found their way in to the hands of the canal workers on pay days. Perhaps some of these tokens are still lying around in old tobacco tins, 1n desk drawers or wherever souvenirs are kept.
