A larronboat HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A NARROWBOAT? ...well you will have the opportunity of not only learning about the narrowboat, but will be able to see one this summer at Seeley's Bay. As part of his participatory contribution to the centennial celebrations for Parks Canada, David Brett, owner of Pleasant View Cottages, Seeley's Bay, has arranged for a replica of the narrowboat, an early English canal boat, to be shipped from England. The narrowboat was used some 60 years ago to ply the canals of England. It features a "traditional" boatsmans cabin, the design of which dates back to the 1800's. Virtually a floating museum, the boat is decorated with the traditional "roses 8: castles" design. It will be moored at the site of Pleasant View Cottages as a tourist attraction, offering yet another example to the many types of canal vessels. Mr. Brett has also acquired a couple of old cottages which will be turned into mini-display areas. One will show various canals from Canada, England & the United States, through paintings, sketches, prints, etc. The other will house an arts and crafts display from a variety of sources. No charge will be made for viewing and visiting these new additions but Mr. Brett hopes to finance the venture through the sales of souvenirs from a small shop on the premises. Later in the year, there will be an official christening of the "Iron Duke", which should arrive sometime in June. Dave Day, Superintendent of the. Rideau Canal will participate in the event. Watch the Lantern for more news of this interesting new venture. *Mr. Brett would appreciate any information about the Rideau Canal, with specific interest in the local history of the Seeley's Bay area.
