paer And l thought we were making some headâ€"way... Over the last few years, most residents of the area have been made increasingly aware of the effects of misuse of our environment. From additives in food 8: indiscriminate use of chemicals on the land, to the careless and wanton decimation of our wild-life. It appeared that these serious matters, which affect not only our lives, but those of future generations, were being addressed in a positive way. Ths the news that, due apparently to .the past and present pollution problems, many of the soâ€"called "goodâ€"for-you" foods are beginning to show signs of dangerous chemical content came as a bit of a shock. Our past is certainly returning to haunt us. The one good point in this matter is, that now, additional priority must be given to g forms of pollution; air, land and water. After the U.S. nuclear accident at Three Mile Island, we believed that everything could be handled "just fine'. This has proven wrong when one looks at the devastation created by the Soviet nuclear incident at Chenoby]. Perhaps those so-called "anti-nuclear beatâ€"niks" have more on the ball than that for which we gave them credit. While world leaders look at nuclear weapons as a deterrent and defensive system, there are those who see nuclear energy as "the way to go" Surely some very serious thinking must be done following the recent events where the peaceful use of nuclear power can create the same devastation as that of a nuclear holocaust. And now to Fish... One of my annual beefs is related to the "jumping of the gun" by various soâ€"called sports fishermen. Considering the opening of Bass season is still some four weeks away, it is very sad to see the constant catching of bass in our shallower lakes. What pleasure do these fishermen achieve, when it is well known that a nesting bass will usually "bite" on anything. How many of the enlightened fishermen are unaware that to remove a bass from the water, unhook and return it to the water, does little to make the bass nesting season asuccess! Many complain that as the years go by, the fishing gets poorer. One reason is that there are more fishermen.. could another be that there is‘ more flagrant abuse of the soâ€"called season? Come on guys (& gals) give the fish a fighting chance otherwise your favourite fishing hole will be completely depleted. PL loam LEEDS LANTERN ' EDITORIAL PAGE WE‘RE FOOLING AROUND AGAIN I We are trying a little change in our lay-out this month... narrower columns. We are attempting to utilize space in a more productive way while still retaining the look of the Lantern. The Lantern seems to grow when we're not even trying, with added advertisers as well as excellent contributions from local writers and volunteer organizations. Every time we go to lay out, we seem to have to add pages, which in turn increases not only production costs but mailing costs as well. On critically appraising recent issues, we find we have lots of "spare white space" which may be better used and permit a reduction in page number. If you like the new format, please let us know. Likewise, if you don't like the narrower column format let us know! The Lantern is m community newspaper and our aim is to meet your needs. We are always happy to hear from you, the reader.
