SOUTH CROSBY FIREHALL & LIBRARY COMPLEX GETS FACE-IJFT! Following a report of the Property Committee of the Library Board re needed maintenace of the facility, Council, due to tight budgeting, felt it could not do exterior cleanâ€"up or maintenace. A group of residents, users of the various parts of the complex,(Library, Fireball, Community Room) decided to attempt to remedy the situation. The North Leeds Lantern started the fund for new paving slabs with a ,donation of $50.00. The Library started a "pot" for paving slabs and within 2 weeks more than $100.00 was donated by patrons. The old walk, which led into the foundation plantings, was moved and new stones laid to replace cracked and damaged ones. Additional slabs were laid, making a walkway to each of the entrances of the Library, Community Room and FireHall. Work was done by P. Little, B. Blackman, R. Little and any hardy patron who walked by during work sessions. Gravel was removed from behind the new walk and soil, courtesy of the newly made parking lot below the Firehall, has been inserted. Art Gordanier donated some 10 bags of planter soil and flower beds are being planted. The Fire Department gave volunteer labour and removed the gravel and graded up to the new walkway. Additional funds are being collected to purchase evergreen foundation shrubs which will be planted in Comunity Room. the Fall. Likewise, it is hoped that several Hanging Planters will be in place before the end of the month. Mrs. M. Keates of Jemima's Garden, is donating perennials for the flower beds as well as doing the work in the preparation of the beds. The Rideau District Horticultural Society have also donated some funds for purchase of plants. Users of the Complex have commented on the improvements and, with a little more work, (painting of eavestrough and Fire Hall doors) the complex should be more presentable. If you wish to donate to this project, please drop in to the Elgin Library and drop your contribution in to the "pot". While a small balance is still owing for paving slabs, it is hoped to have all monies needed to complete the project before mid-July.
