I'm not sure why the three policemen that pulled me over were laughing, but I have narrowed it down to three possibilities: (i) it could have been the fact that my trusty bicycle is a girl's bike or (ii) it could have been the unique style with which the 6 ft 4 in. foreigner was riding his girls bike in a futile attempt to avoid dislodging his knee caps on the handlebars or (iii) it could have been the fact that 1 was transporting an acoustic guitar precariously balanced on the front basket, with the neck of my precious instrument buckled into my hood to secure it from falling. Whatever the reason, after a high speed chase, (that I didn't realize was going on because I was listening to my walkman), they apprehended me and my adventure began. I got off my bike, (with my guitar hanging from my hood, and my walkman headphones ajar to the point of impairing my visionl), and introduced myself. At this point it should probably be noted, (or maybe it shouldn't), that all foreigners in Japan must always have either an Alien Registration Certificate, or their passport on their person. In the event that you do not, it is off to jail until a representative from your embassy vouches for you. Needless to say I had neither of the necessary documents. Having dealt with the Canadian embassy in both Paris and Tokyo 1 was not particularly Optimistic about my chances of doing anything but rotting in a cell in the event that I ended up in jail. Therfore I decided to protect my interest (and guitar) through what 1 like to Call selective ignorance. Everytime the Japanese words for 'wallet', 'identification', ‘alien', 'passport', etc came up I let a blank look invade my eyes (some would argue it is already therei) and I'd say in Japanese "Wakarimasen" - meaning I don't understand. At the same time I confused them by talking about Canada, weather, baseball, guitars, my height, Japan, etc. I had a great time chatting with these three confused men. We set off in a little ccnvoy for the police station. About 2 hours, and four thousand five hundred "Wakarimasen's" later I was released! I seem to be finding unique ways to practice my Japanese skills. It was an evening well spent, although I fear that I did nothing to promote the reputation of Canadians or foreigners as anything but selectively ignorant'. A
