Business reports were given by Phyllis Fuller, Lucille Strong and Hazel Diamond. A motion to have a pot luck luncheon and gift exchange for the December meeting was passed. The meeting will be held on December 13th - Peter LEGION BIG DEER CONTEST H883 Portland Rideau Lakes Branch No. 231, R.C.L., Big Deer Contest "88" concluded with a dance on November 19th. The "Rubbles" band provided the music for a moderate crowd. The winners were declared . and prizes awarded as follows: lst prize: a Winchester Model 70, 308 rifle was won by Knapp of Chaffey's Lock, with a 225 pounder. 2nd prize: a Lakefield pump action 12 gauge shotgun was won by John Fortier of Elgin, with a 223 pounder. 3rd prize: a reversible hunting jacket, donated by Randy Cannon, was won by Keith Clarke of Kingston, with a 221 pounder. A number of draw prizes which were donated by area merchants were awarded. The Legion extends thanks and appreciation to all who assisted - prize donors, ticket and Cheryl Battams at Portland. The fine weather permitted a pleasant parade and ceremony and a piper livened things up. The Elgin and Portland Volunteer Fire Departments, the ambulance services, Scouts, Cubs, Beavers and Brownies participated and assisted with the wreath laying under the capable guidance of Comrade Bertha Dillon. Comrade Linton McConville was parade marshall. Legion members attended the splendid remembrance services at the Portland and Elgin Schools on November 1 1th. the Principal, Staff and students are to be commended on their fine performance and we salute them. Following the services on November 6th, there was an open house at the Portland Community Hall where the Ladies Auxiliary provided lunch.
