16 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN MARCH I992 \ SIMPLY cARpENING March is that wonderful month when our Old English Sheepdog turns into a walking mud puddle, the kids rediscover puddles and spring threatens to break out all over. It actually is one of my favourite months because it has all the promise and none of the problems of spring. Normally I hesitate to plug our own business in this column but this time I think we are doing something that is worth talking about. Our annual spring seminar is set for March 28 at Pineview Public School. This year we are bringing in some special speakers. The first is Ed Lawrence. Ed is better known as the host of CBC radio Ottawa's gardening phone-in show as well as being the supervisor of horticultural operations for the Governor General. Ed will be discussing spring flowering bulbs and will be available to answer questions from the audience. Our second imported speaker is less well known in this area but much better known in the Toronto area. David Tomlinson, a landscape architect, trained at Kew England is a well known gardener and speaker. His garden, " Merlin's Hollow" was featured in the premier issue of Canadian Gardening magazine. David will be discussing his own garden's development from its humble beginnings to its present impressive condition. Naturally, Andrea and I will also be presenting talks. Andrea will focus on garden design thoughts with her presentation on Movement in the Garden and I will present a grab bag of plants, thoughts and other good stuff. Those of you who are interested in this Keeping air movement around the seedlings will help prevent damp off. Once the seedlings have fully developed true leaves they can be transplanted into a larger container. We have found that on a home scale, it is better to move your seedlings directly into 4" pots. ‘These pots allow your seedlings to fully develop and give them an extra head start in the garden. Do not forget this year that you should not do any lawn work until the lawn has fully dried out and you are not leaving little tracks in your lawn. Its a great idea to rake out any dead spots and then reseed these areas. In fact, spreading a very thin layer of manure or compost over your lawn is a great spring tonic.
