Dr. Aaron H. Chamberlain's Medical Ledgers
Cost of Services
Dr. Chamberlain’s ledgers give us an idea of how he was running his business financially. The average cost of a visit was $1.00-$2.00 and patients were charged between 25 and 50 cents for medicine every time they needed it. Dr. Chamberlain also charged every time he saw a patient, even if it was in the same day. In the 1899-1901 ledger, Dr. Chamberlain was visited by a patient in the morning, as well as in the evening and charged $1.50 each time. Although Dr. Chamberlain does not record detailed specifics about his calls and visits, the ledgers do suggest that delivering babies, bandaging wounds, extracting teeth, and tending to women who had miscarriages, were common appointments. At the bottom of each page of the ledgers, Dr. Chamberlain often added up the total charges in order to keep track of his profits.
