Nathanial Dyment is viewed by many to be the founder of Thessalon. He arrived in Thessalon in 1871 and died in 1906.
In 1876, he established his first mill after purchasing 300 acres of land on the east side of the Thessalon River.

This 1876 survey map shows the location of the Dyment Mill. It was located on the south end of Main Street. However, much of the Dyment logging operations were situated in the Kirkwood area north of Thessalon.
N. and A's Dyment's Lumber Woods Towell's Crew, Thessalon, 1890 Details
Towell's crew was representative of crews that would have worked for Dyment Lumber in the forests north of Thessalon. This particular camp operated in the Kirkwood forest until 1908.

This is a photo of Albert E. Dyment, youngest son of Nathanial Dyment. Albert was a federal member of parliament for Algoma, and master of the local Masonic Lodge.
Albert also oversaw operations of the Dyment Lumber Company from 1892 to 1906. After the sale of the lumber company, the death of his father, and an unsuccessful re-election bid, he moved to southern Ontario to manage his father's thoroughbred racehorses with his brother Simon.
