This photo shows the Holcome grist mill next to the river, while the sawmill is located on the right.
Thomas Holcombe started up the grist mill about 1878 and operated it until fire destroyed it in 1920. "It was the first grist mill on the North Shore east of Sault Ste. Marie...and was welcomed by local settlers."
The sawmill operated by John Holcombe from approximately 1890, employed twelve men at full capacity and also made cedar shingles.
The sawmill "...did custom milling as well as processed logs supplied by small camp owners and logs purchased by settlers..." until it burned down in 1920.
Notes accompanying a copy of this photo in the book Shantymen and Sodbusters read, "Crew building slide for sluicing logs over rapids at Little Rapids... Gristmill in foreground. Vacant lot on right was site of the Arlington Hotel."
This photo circa 1923, shows the Little Rapids dam and flume to the powerhouse. The dam, located on the left side of the photo, shows water rushing down from it. The long flume can be seen extending towards the remains of a gristmill on the right, while sluiceway remains are visible on the left.
This photo shows the remains of the one story, stone construction power house for Holcombe Mills. Power lines can be seen seen attached to the building and remains of a log sluice-way are visible beyond the power house.
