Located just east of Toronto, the Town of Whitby is situated centrally in the Regional Municipality of Durham, formerly known as Ontario County. The current boundaries of the Town of Whitby include the former municipalities of the Township of Whitby (incorporated in 1852) and the Town of Whitby (incorporated in 1855). The Town and Township amalgamated in 1968 to create the current Town of Whitby. The Archives at Whitby Public Library holds the historical administrative records of both the Township, which includes the Village of Brooklin and the Hamlets of Ashburn, Myrtle, and Myrtle Station, and the Town.
