Luther Vipond Memorial Arena Details
Both the Brooklin and Whitby arenas were demolished in the early 1970s when they failed to meet the newly introduced building codes and new arenas were built in their stead.
The new Brooklin Memorial Arena was built on the existing site in 1972/73. It was later renamed the Luther Vipond Memorial Arena on Remembrance Day 1982 after lifelong Brooklin resident and long-time arena manager (1953-1979), Luther Vipond.
500 Victoria Street West, April 1976 Details
A new 1500-seat arena called Iroquois Park was built in 1973/74 at the corner of Henry and Victoria Streets in Whitby. Iroquois Park Sports Centre has grown over the years to be one of Canada’s largest municipally owned sports and recreation complexes.
With population growth in the town and more groups needing ice time, a new arena was built at 222 McKinney Drive and officially opened on October 23, 2004. McKinney Centre has 3 ice rinks, with one solely dedicated to figure skating. Each arena has the capacity to hold 250 spectators.
