- Description
- A black and white drawing of Canadian Pad, Glove and Blanket Co. Ltd, Whitby, Ont. (Blanket Factory), c.1929.
- Notes
- In 1910, Samuel Trees opened the blanket factory at 211 Brock Street North on the block bounded by Mary, Perry, and John Streets. Officially known as Samuel Trees and Company, the blanket factory manufactured blankets and collars for horses. The factory was in operation until 1958 and the building was demolished in 1962.
The building began as an agricultural foundry called Brown Post and Company in 1854. It was later renamed Brown and Patterson, Patterson Brothers, Mowat Manufacturing Company, and finally, the Farmers Co-operative Manufacturing Company. Samuel Trees purchased the factory in 1909.
The blanket factory was one of three main industries in Whitby during the early 20th century. The buckle factory, also owned by Samuel Trees, and the tannery were also important manufacturers at this time. - Date of Original
