Sch izoph ren la= the misunderstood disease Schizophrenia is a biochemi- cal disease of the brain. _It is an illness which tends to surface when there is stress and it tends to run in families. It causes changes in one's thinking, percep- tion, mood and behavior. It is not a split or multiple personality, as often confused by the public. Schizophrenia is a serious ill- ness that is more common than most of us think, It is a very mis- understood illness, and this mis- understanding creates, for those affected with schizophrenia and their families, a stigma and a huge burden. I would like to attempt to clar- ify some of the misunderstand- ings associated with schizophre- nia because, those with this ill- ness, and their families need and S ATTENTION Bats re-gripped, baseball uniforms, cresting, lettering, softballs and sporting goods. Approximately 250,000 Canadians suffer from schizophrenia, and many more will develop it at some point in their lives. Worldwide there are about 40 million people who have this illness. Obviously, numbers are not a reason for misunder- standing. Is it possible that we think it is an illness that occurs when one is older? This too, is a poor reason for misunderstanding because it usually hits people between the ages of 15 and 25. This means that one has schizophrenia for many years, not just their last 5- 10 years. One reason our understanding of schizophrenia is minimal, is that there is no known cause or cure for it. Fortunately, it is not the hopeless illness it once was; now supportive therapy and antipsychotic medication have made it possible for schizophren- ics to lead normal lives in their Library Ten resolutions for successful reading at the Terrace Bay Public Library. 1. Another reason why schizphrenia is poorly under- stood, is that we may be personal- ly fearful of losing our own sani- ty. this is an extremely difficult concept for each of us to handle. We may also fear that schizophre- nia patients are violent. In actual- ity people suffering from mental illness are no more violent than those suffering from cancer or diabetes. Most patients will with- draw and isolate themselves because they are very inhibited and afraid of real life situations. Schizophrenics and their fami- lies need and deserve support and understanding. They don't need the STIGMA;; they already have the illness. Those affected with schizophrenia are human beings, and certainly deserve the right to be treated as such. April 29- May 5: Mental Health Week Rhonda O'Connor, R.N. Mental Health Worker News 10.
