Master Corporal Marty Maloney touches down just off the tarmac at the Terrace Bay Airport after jumping out of a CC11S Buffalo during a Photo by Dave Chmara Search & Rescue is exciting, challenging aircraft of each type is on con- stant standby 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. During working hours both aircraft are required to be airborne within 30 minutes of being alerted. During quiet hours and weckends, the aircraft are required to be airborne within two hours. On average, both aircraft are airborne within 10 minutes on 30- minute alert and within one hour on two hour alert. The Search and Rescue crews are very highly trained, profes- sionals. Pilots, flight engineers, and Search and _ Rescue Technicians (SAR Techs), along with their normal flying training, take additional SAR training. SAR Techs take a physically and mentally demanding eight month course that involves parachuting, medical assistance, - scuba diving and mountain climb- ing to name a few. Once this training is complet- ed, they are then qualified to jump into crash sites to aid the injured. At other times they are low- ered into the scene from a heli- copter hovering100 feet above the site. For example, in a situation where an aircraft has crashed into the side of a mountain, the best way to rescue the injured occu- pants is to lower the SAR Tech to a ledge near the aircraft on a ver- tical rock face. This calls for expertise, professionalism and above all coordination between the pilot, the flight engineer oper- ating the hoist, and the rescue' specialist dangling from the wire. The reward these people earn is the satisfaction of having saved human lives.
