"CITY LIMITS" Third at" Bluegrass Festival At a recent Blue- grass Festival held in Renfrew, outside of Ot- tawa, Mac Wiseman, Doc Watson and other top bands from the Uni- ted States and Canada performed. On the same stage, the organizers held the Pinnacle Hill Bluegrass Band Contest for aspiring bluegrass groups. To anyone who has heard them it did not come as a surprise that our' local group "City Limits" did well. They placed third in the competition and fully in- tend to win it next year. The four members have only been playing together for six months, though each individual in the group has a great deal of experience with music. Ivan Parise, leader of the group has been play- ing guitar and banjo for a long time resulting in his son Darin becom- ing interested in the in- struments and- joining him at get-togethers with family and friends. Darin prefers the ban- jo and is also very profi- lin. The father and son team has been playing as "City Limits" for about 2 years but lost a couple of members to family commitments. Rick Anglehart, for- merly a_ professional cient with the mando- lead guitarist, fiddler and song writer joined them, -as did Wade Cornect who plays bass «guitar. Wade's vocal abilities seem to be the to the harmony they have developed in such a short time. The group attributes a great deal of their suc- cess in achieving a good sound to the assistance of Betty Hanley. All of the band members play their music by ear and have little formal music Wednesday, August 29, 1984 Vol. 19, No. 34 errace Ba couaiber y Federal Candidates in the Riding of THENTEW/ } Public Library | TERRACE BAY, ONT. Betty's experi- ence in that area as well as her patience with these new students has been extremely val- uable. They are now practic- ing 7 days a week, 4 hours a day and have in- vested a great deal in new sound equipment as they intend to make a master tape and a re- cording. Next summer they will compete in festivals in New York and Newfoundland. If you did not hear them perform at the Intercultural Festival where Ivan's daughter Monique joined them, or at the Moose Hall Bene- fit, you may have miss- ed your chance for a while. They are booked COCHRANE - SUPERIOR» Ray Brunet DEMOCRATS 28 NEO-DEMOCRATES Guy Desjardins Keith Penner to play in White*Rives Longlac, Hearst, Tite. mins, and Thunder Bay.
