Box 579, Terrace Bay, or bring it to Superior Hockey School's Director, Dave Siciliano, has indicated that the 1984 summer hockey school is ready for another successful summer. The number of boys per group has been decreased to 30 plus 4 goalies to allow more space on the ice and in the dressing rooms. This will also cut the teacher-studént ratio down. The school has 2-two week sessions, July 30 - August 11th and August 13-25th and two 1-week sessions, July 23-28 and August 27 - September 1st, which is the advanc- ed skills programme. Over the past five years the school has in- stituted a very strong in- structional programme that has improved each player significantly. The quality of instruc- tion and the emphasis on skill development have been key elements of success. Most of the instruc- tors are returning, giv- ing the programme a wealth of practical ex- perience blended with good fundamental teaching techniques. Our instructors are pro- fessional hockey players, coaches and teachers. They, combin- ed with the programme content can be very in- strumental in giving your boy the best in- structional and en- joyable experience anywhere. The advanced skills programme is an in- novative programme to help those players who are of the all-star or representative team calibre. Only players with these qualities are allowed into this one Figure Skating continued from page 10 Jackie Glad - Pre- liminary Ladies A_ - Bronze - flight; Corrine Bouchie - Pre- liminary Ladies B - gold - final; Betty Hopper - Pre- liminary Ladies B_ - bronze - final; Shane Jowitt - Pre- liminary Men - bronze - final; Paula Bouchard - Pre- Novice - Ladies B - silver - final; Ashley Riley and Shane Jowitt - Prelim- inary Dance - gold. They are grouped 10-12, 13-14 and 15-16 years of age. Only 20 players plus 3 goalies/group are ad- mitted. They will receive advanced in- struction in team play concepts and_-- ex- perience professional- like practices. The instructors in the programme are Brian DePiero, Ken Clifton, Doug Colbon, Dan Moro, Ian MacRae, Larry Krawchuk, Ab Slivinski, Mike Busniuk, Rick St. Croix, Dave _ Fitz- ' patrick, Lyn Jorgenson, Dave Watson, Bob Ger- vis, Lorne Allard, Sean Donohue, Brian McLeod, Bob DePiero, Rob Perger and Alex Dampier, Vince Friyia, Kim Gellert, Clyde Tuyle, Frank Gonzalez, and Jack Sinclair. The school's on site director is Jamie McDonald who is a player-coach in Spain this season. Most of our instructors have been with the school over the last 6 to 8 years. The daily ice pro- gramme consists of two hours of instruction in the morning - one hour of power skating and one hour of skill instruc- tion. The skating session emphasizes the necessary skills involv- ed with striding forward and backward to stopp- ing, pivots, sharp turns, cross-overs, and much more. The second hour is devoted to teaching skills such as passing, shooting, stickhandling, checking and also game situations such as 1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 1, and 3 vs. 2. In the afternoon the boys are equally distributed on two teams and learn some basics of breakouts and good skating and cost- umes. They are also in training for the last com- petition of the season which will be held in Scarborough on April 19, 20, 2ist. The scrim- mages are videotaped and played back to the boys to point out the positive and negative aspects of team play. A colour VTR system is used providing a great learning experience. Besides the ice pro- gramme there is an off- ice programme both in the classroom and on the field. The classroom sessions are designed to teach the basic concepts through the use of films, videotapes of the scrim- mage and chalk talks. The field programme is demanding because of our emphasis on: total conditioning, but fun in its approach. Games such as __ soccer, baseball, track and field and practice shooting are conducted along with daily. running and calisthenics. Each group has a councillor who is with the boys all day and helps on the ice, in the field, and in the classroom. The boys usually relate very closely with the coun- cillor and thus a rapport and a friendship is developed besides main- taining discipline. The fee includes a pro- fessional hockey school jersey, a hot dog feed with the presentation of awards, crests, group pictures, certificates and evaluations plus on and off ice test results. Most of the parents at- tend the final game on Saturday and have the opportunity to discuss their boy's progress 3 I'll tumble for ya!
