Description
This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. It features the Gregory family of Zorra Township in East Nissouri. The Gregory family were one of the earliest settlers of the area. The family eventually owned Lot 29 and Lot 30 on Concession 11 and farmed on the property. This board and batten house was built on the east half of Lot 30 and still stands today; however, the home has been altered with additions and eventually a new structure built around it. This house remains within the structure of the larger, more recent house.

The Gregory family appear well-dressed as they pose for the picture. The photo includes the head of the family, widower Gilbert Gregory, and his children Edith, Almeda, Bernice and Almina (Minnie). He had eleven children in total with his late wife Sarah (née Taylor). Gregory would later sell this property to his son Bernice and move to a house in St. Marys in 1919.

The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.

This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 947. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County.
