PHILIPSVILLE WOMEN'S INSTITUTE The Philipsville W.I. held their meetâ€" ing on Nov. lst in the hall. Mrs. Jansen welcomed all the visitors. The meeting opened with the Ode and Mary Stewart Collect. Roll call was "the oldest pic- ture of your house" and something about it. Mrs. Davison, our curator, told everyâ€" one how the Tweedsmuir history book was started. It began with a meeting held in Portland which she attended, and she named the book. Mrs. Hollis Chant gave a very interâ€" esting paper on Chantry from the first people who settled there to the present. Mrs. Cliff Morris made a map with every place named and where they lived. Mrs. Albert Gile gave an interesting paper on Harlem. It was first called Smith's Mills, but was later changed to Harlem. She also had pictures from the first to the present. Before everyone looked at the books and map, a two minute silense was ob- served for Remembrance Day. The National Anthem closed this part of the meeting. A contest was held on what relation are they to you with Mrs. R. Bongler the winner. Gifts were presented by Mrs. Bower to Mrs. Chant and Mrs. Gile in ap- preciation for their help in making this an interesting meeting. A delicious lunch was served by the directors. Mrs. Cliff Morris had the marked tea Cup. _ w hideau Centennial (. The creative playground was finally installed at the school this past week. Monies were raised by various activities at the school then matched by a Wintario grant through the Ministry of Culture and Recreation Activities included a bowl-a-thon, our annual Fun Fair, Bake Sales, and proceeds from hot dog sales for one year. We were very fortunate to also receive private donations from local groups. Even though it was late in the season the weather. coâ€"operated and work was under way. The Hilan Crew were engaged for two days plus volunteers included Lionel Gee, Owen Fitzgerald, Ron Visser, Jim d Liz Vanderschuit and Joan f ggtchison, Grade 8‘s helped by spreading sand the next day. The school and community owe Joan and Jim a great deal of thanks for the hours spent on the paper work and telephone calls involved in getting this project completed. Hideau Crafts The monthly meeting of Rideau Crafts was held at Forfar Hall, on November 12, with Pat McManus in the chair. Discussions were based on our Summer School plans for 1980, the appointment of an Executive Secretary and preparations for our Christmas Sale. , It was suggested by Mary Warren that an inventory list should be developed of Ridesu Craft belong- ings. Dorene McManus has received two more awards for her spinning. All friends and members offer her sincere congratulations. A slide presentation on Fabric College, by Marion Spanderjt of Orangeville followed the business meeting. The Rideau Craft Christmas Craft Sale was held at Rideau District High School on November 24th, with great cooperation from the weather. This show and sale was once again organized by Brys Scovil with able assistance from Barbara Purdy. Mrs. Scovil reports that our seventh year was the most successful, with more visitors and buyers than ever before. Rideau Crafts and all vendors understand all the hard work in- volved in organising such an oper- ation, and would like Brys and Barb- ara to accept a very sincere vote of thanks from all. It was a very professionally run show and sale. Sch 09! SCHOOL COMM ITTE E Mrs. Carolyn Visser is the new chairperson for our school committee. The remainder of the executive is as follows: Mrs. Diane Haskinsâ€"Vice Chairperson Mrs. Lynne Evansâ€"Secretary- Treasurer Dr. John Kelk ‘ Mr. Mike Hutchison Mrs. Judy Rogers Mrs. Evans and Mrs. Visser have reserved the gymnasium every Thursday evening between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. for a ladies fitness and exercise program. Just show up in - approvriate attire any Thursday. Many of our grade seven and eight students have joined a new interâ€"school basketball league which is being run by community volunteers on Tuesday evenings. Parents & Community If you have an hour or two any time during the week we still need volunteers to do simple thingsâ€"for example: listening to individual children read or assisting them with beginning mathematics.
