(Frank's Rd. off Hwy 15) 359 - 51:35 Nursing Course Intensive care unit nurses through- out Eastern Ontario now can upgrade professional skills on the job, thanks to a provincially unique part-time St. Lawrence college course. Doris Johnson, a nurse at Brockville General was one of the first to take advantage of it. "To obtain this training before, I would have had to go out of town." St. Lawrence teaching master, Ann Ford, decided that nurses should not have to for- feit employment for the sake of professional development. She de- veloped the 21 week part-time course which now enables intensive care unit nurses to learn new skills without leaving their jobs to re- turn to school,The result is an over- flow in the course's second of- fering and a waiting list for the third in February. The intensive care unit course content emphasizes the knowledge needed to cope with situations most likely to be encountered by ICU personnel. Clinical experience at Kingston and Ottawa hospitals is included, as well as in home hos- pitals. Resource persons from these outside institutions play an im- portant role in teaching the course. Professional medical, nursing and legal personnel from Brockville and Smiths Falls also teach in this post-graduate program. For more information, contact: Ann Ford, 345-0660, Ext. 280.
