Highway 15 Portland; Ont. 272-2787 ‘ Catch Fire Fever I . Gardening November is a good time for preparing perennials and shrubs for winter by mulching. Mulch is applied after a hard frost to prevent heaving by alternate freezing and thawing, not to prevent damage from frost. Put 2 or 3 buckets of compost around each rhubarb plant. Raspberries apnreciate a good layer of co. ost as do fruit trees and * perennial bed. In the pe? 11 bed put mulch underneath 'es that stay green all wi.» ~â€"-don't cover them. An exam} of such a plant is the ferglove. After the frost has We“ owed the foliage of the argus, I like to cut it back an inch or tWO above the ground and then apply a thick layer, up to 4 inches, of compost or strawy manure. The compost enriches the soil as well as giving protection from heaving. If you grow blueberry bushes, apply a thick mulch of pine needles or oak leaves. This is also the time to hill up the roses. First of all, rake up and destroy fallen leaves and any pruninas lying on the ground. Do not add to the compost pile. Then take earth (or compost) from some other area and pile it around the plant 8â€"10 inches high. I like to use compost or well- rotted cow manure which can be spread around the bushes in spring and thus be an added benefit to the bushes. If you have young fruit trees you would be wise to give some protection from damage by rodents and sun. There are rodent repellants which can be painted on the tree trunk or you can encircle the trunk with hardware cloth (%" welded wire). Don't put the wire tight against the trunk but rather make a sort of fence about an inch or two away from the trunk. The paint-on rodent repellant must be app- lied on a mild day. Late winter sun can cause burning and Splitting of the bark on the trunk, vertically. To prevent this, wrap the trunk with strips of heavy paper or burlap. Don't use plastic for this. Neither should you use plastic wrappings in an effort to protect evergreen shrubs. The sun can cause the plastic to act as a greenhouse and heat the plant up which can damage the bark and buds. Use a burlap screen or an Aâ€" frame instead. After your garden chores are finished, don't forget to clean your tools and apply petroleum jelly to the metal parts, before you store them for the winter° “‘37 W! FOR6£T
