page 2 ' EDITORIAL PAGE- Dear Readers, Notices regarding rate increas- es have gone out to Community Tel- ephone customers again this year. If their application is accepted, we are in for some stiff increasâ€" es. Proposed increases range from 80% to over 100%! Those with a private line will find that their monthly rate has gone from $5.85 to $10.55.Business users will pay a monthly rate of $23.80,up from $13.05. The largest increase will be for installation of new phones, from $24.00 to $50.00! Many local telephone subscrib- ers are wondering what increase in expenses could justify such large increases in a one year perâ€" iod. Community Tiephone did make im- provements in the quality of ser- vice after public objections to rate increases two years ago. however ,service is still very limited in that local calling areas are so limited. Many sub- scribers face long distance charges when calling schools, fire departments ,township of- fices and other essential ser- vices.. No local hearing about these increases will be held unless it is requested by those affected. If you want the chance to partiâ€" cipate in a public hearing fill in the following clipâ€"out and mail it off to: Ontario Telephone Service Corp. 3625 Dufferin St., Suite 200, Downsview ,Ont. One of the persons who has worked consistently to improve the quality of‘ life in our area is Mary Warren. Prior to moving to Chsffeys Locks with her family to live permanently, hary was a. member of the Lake Ontario Regional Library Board. She soon transferred her concern for library service to South Crosby. Along with other interested individuals, she was instrumental in having a. library established in that township. Following the success of this, she guided a committee which worked towards a. county library system for Leeds 8: Grenville. 'ihe outcome of the failure to achieve this was the creation of our present Rideau Lakes Union Library, with libraries situated in 6 villages within 4 municipalities. Mary served as the first chairperson of this board and provided leadership for the union through its formative years. For a. number of years Eastern Ontario Library System has offered a variety of programs to libraries in eastern Ontario. Following Mary's suggestion to E.O.L.S., these programs were expanded to include the subjects of craft and wild plants. A number of local peeple participated in demon- strating to many others across this section of the province their skills and talents in various fields. Approximately 7 years ago, Mary was one of the founding members of Ridean Crafts - an organization dedicated to the enrichment of our comnnmity through crafts. A large number of craft courses have been offered over the ensuing years. A stunner market was established to provide an outlet for the sale of local goods. The annual Christmas Market has become a focal point for local crafts-peeple. In the past 2 years a. craft program has been offered, free of charge, in a local school to grade 7 and 8. During the summer of 1979, the Rideau Crafts Sumner School began its first year of operation with hopes that many more will follow. Certainly all of this has been accomplished by the efforts of many people; however, Mary has worked steadily to make Rideau Crafts an organization with a. strong impact on our comzity. ‘ Within Chaffeys Locks, Mary's conunity involvement has been just as pronounced - within the Womens’ Institute ;and the senior citizens' groups. She is chairperson of the building comittee jwhich has arranged for the addition of a kitchen and activity room to the Vomsns Institute Hall. The preservation of historic sites is another of Mary's interests. And, recently, a. LACA (Local Architectural Conservation Advisory) Comittee was formed by the Township of South Crosby. Since the responsibility for historic sites rests with the local municipality, it is hoped that this comittee will campile lists of historically valuable sites and buildings which should be preserved. From there, plans can be made as to what form this preservation should take. This is by no means a complete catalogue of Mary's commuty activities, but should give cause for reflection on the need to say “thank-you" for helping to enrich our lives.
