Passeâ€"â€" As another summer season draws to a close along the Rideau Corrider, it seems to be a good time to reflect on the work Parks Canada is doing in Jones Falls. Jones Falls, the site of Colonel By's greatâ€" est achievement, has been vastly underrated for many years. The four locks provide the greatest average lift along the Rideau. The horseshoe dam was the second largest of its kind in the world when it was built â€" and the beauty of the surround ings is unsurpassed. Parks Canada is focussing a lot of attention on Jones Falls these days. They have already restored the blacksmith's shop to working condition and .have begun work on the lock master's house in- side and out to house a museum reflecting the life of Jones Falls first lock- master, kr. Sweeney. Llso included in future plans are nature trails, more picnic tables and parking. At the Lantern, we are aware that there is a delicate balance to be maintained here, in.order to develop the Rideau Corrider to its full poâ€" tential without giving away to commercialism. Carry on larks Canada, we are all watching intently. \:>2§§2/’ The North Leeds Lantern is distributed free of charge to all households in the Townships of South Crosby, Bastard and South Burgess, Rear of Leeds and Lans- downe and the Village of Newboro.
