Old Hands And New Designs When my husband and I moved to Portland four years ago on a part- time basis, and then a year ago on a year-round residency, and became familiar with all the activities of the Rideau Crafts Club, I realized that I had a one-person Rideau Crafts- woman in my mother. I am afraid that I have always taken it for grant- ed that almost anything I wanted, from miniature dolls and furniture for a doll's house to a crocheted table cloth suitable for a banquet, my'mother could produce it. About the only crafts she has not attempted are pottery and jewelry making. Now that her hands have stiffened up with arthritis, and her eyesight is not very keen, she works on crafts that are more easily managed -- mitts and toques and need1e_point place mats made on very coarse canvas. This spring, however, she has sur- prised us once again by arriving for a visit with a hooked rug, 27" x 52" in a modern design for the floor in front of our fireplace. After having tried out a bit of hooking with nylon yarn, which pulls through the canvas easily, she discovered her right hand was strong enough to work with wool. In less than six weeks, she made this beautiful rug, and we are so amazed, that we must share our delight with other hookers. hours in my mother's life. There are no dull She is Mrs. I.F.
