Youth programs; 2. Assistance to citizens in dist- ress in the area caused by adverse circumstances or disaster; 3. Area improvement programs; 4. Legion social life within the area; 5. Service to veterans and depend- ents within the area who require assistâ€" ance; 6. Assistance in acquiring club room facilities. We are seeking ex members and serving members of the forces. Sons and daughâ€" ters of members are also qualified to join as the membership requirements have been substantially relaxed in the past few years. Other associate member- ships may qualify. This meeting will be of interest to all area parents of preâ€" schoxlers. Our special guests for the evening will be a representative of the St. Lawrence College Preâ€" school Education program, our 3 area kindergarten teachers and our own teacher, Hrs. Heather Green. Each of these ladies will describe her program. The meeting will take place at 8 p.m. in the nursery school in Elgin. The children in the nursery school will spend the month of March learning about health, nutrition and the senses. The dental nurse from the Health Unit will be in the school march 14th and 15th. Twentyâ€"eight contestants participated from 5 area elementary schools - Beverly Elementary, Delta, South Crosby School, Elgin, Rideau Centennial, Portland, Rideau Vista, Westport, and St. Edwards, Westport. First place winners received $20.00, a small trophy, plus a RCL Certificate - Second place winners received $15.00 and a Certificate, Third Place winners received $10.00 and a certificate, all other entries received a certificate. The winners were â€" Primary Div. Gr. 1-3 1st place - Jennifer MacLennan - South Crosby 2nd place - Jeannette MCGlade â€" .St. Edwards 3rd place â€" a TIE - Kelly Donnelly St. Edwards Jim Summers, South Crosby Junior Division - Gr. 4-6 1st place â€" Lorie Smith South Crosby 2nd place - Dana Smith Rideau Centennial 3rd place - Joanne Diotte St. Edwards Senior Division â€" Gr. 7-8 1st place â€" a TIE Anna Maria Skoryna South Crosby Barry Murphy, St. Edwards 5rd place â€" Marty Smith, Rideau Centennial The school plaque which is pre- sented for one year to the school with the contestant having the highest perâ€" centage will be held jointly this year by South Crosby and St. Edwards Schools. The winning contestants names will be engraved on the plaque - Anna Maria Skoryna and Barry Mhrphy, who tied for highest percentage points. A social half hour was held at the close of the evening with coffee and sandwiches supplied by the branch ladies. The branch would like to thank all those who helped to make the evenâ€" ing a success, namely, our own hard working Public Speaking Chairman, Comrade John Greenhorn, the pupils, teachers and principals of the schools participating, as without their support the Legion Public Speaking Contest would not be held. The branch would also like to thank the following judges for giving their time â€" Mrs. Jacqueline Carpenter, Mrs. Brys Scovil and Mr. Douglas Evans.
