When you drop your trowel among the bedding plants or your hoe in the garden in the summer when the growth is luxuriant it will be much easier to see the bright colour than it would be if your tool was the usual dull gray. Also if you garden with a friend or lend tools you will be able to identify yours quickly at the end of the day. With nice weather when you're just itching to get at the flower bed or whatever don't rush out to remove the mulch. Remove it gradually and only completely when you're sure the freezing cold weather has ended. Vermiculite is a good thing to add to potting soil when working with house plants or starting seeds. I find soil tends to be too heavy by itâ€" self and the vermiculite light- ens it very nicely. You can buy it anywhere gardening supplies are sold or for about 1/0 the price â€" or at any rate considerably cheaper â€" at a building supply centre. When buying it there, ask for Zonolite. Zonolite is a granular form of insulation. Now is the time to care for your fruit trees. Prune out unwanted branches i.e. those that rub or will rub against each other, ones that are too low or if it is a neglected apple tree about 1/3 of the excess branches. The tree should be open so that the apples can get the sunshine on them. If it's an Old apple tree it's also a good idea to scrape the trunk with a hoe to rub off old loose bark where insects love to hide, then tie a loose band of Old burlap around the trunk to trap summer larvae. Before the buds start to come to life, when most danger Of freezing nights is over is the time to spray fruit trees for mites, leafâ€"rollers and scale with a dormant oil spray. This spray can be purâ€" chased at your garden supply centre and is an organic type of spray. It kills the insect eggs by smothering them. It must not be used once the buds have swelled appreciably. When the leaf buds on some varieties of clematis start to show is the time to prune â€" C x Jackmanii, Comtesse de Bouchard. Cut these varieties back to 1â€"2 feet. On Henyrii and Ramona, thin out only weak and dead wood to produce early large blooms. Give clematis a generous application of lime every 3 years. ANSWERS 1. The Blacks live in Portland. 2.
