‘a "why/“*7 WESTPORT CARNIVAL - HUGE SUCCESS The Westport Winter Carnival '80 has come and gone, but as uSual it was very successful providing fun events for young and old. The weatherman did not bring a large amount of snow, but he did provide sunny skies and crisp winter temperatures for the outdoor activities. Visitors flocked in from neighbouring communities, larger 0n- tario centers and from across the border. Saturday was busy for all age groups and for m‘nor hockey fans. Here the young hockey stars of tomorrow batâ€" tled to win the championship in each division. Smiths Falls won the 'A' Division and Nepean the 'B‘ Division. At the Fire Hall hundreds of shoppers and browsers visited all the displays in the Flea Market. It was a fine show this year with crafts such as macrame, ceramics, dried flower arrangements, needlework, woodworking and carving. Jim Janeway's beautiful oil paintings drew the admiration of all visitors. Toboggan races for the children was a popular event. Winners were: 5â€"7 years, Lisa & Jana Trowbridge; 8-9 years, lst. Susie Merkley & Susie McCulloch, 2nd. Jamie Scott & Todd Trowbridge; 10-12 yrs. lst. Jamie Gard & Mark McCreary; 2nd. Roseanne Scott & Donny Byrne. Winners of the Fish Derby were Bill McCulloch for the hidden weight, and Stan Bardeen for the largest walleye. The lack of snow hampered the snow sculpture entry, but the following winners scraped up enough to prepare excellent exhibits. This year 6 teams puffed and moaned to try to bring the winner's trophy to their side, but the efforts of the Bedford Township team was successful. Thake's Monuments team was runner up. Other participants were: Mulville's Drillers, Perth Hydro, Bucklands Dairy & North Crosby Township. Snowmobile races were conducted by the Ottawa Snowmobile Racing Assn. and were held on the Upper Rideau Lake. A large number of machines and a huge crowd made this a very successful afternoon. On Sunday about 24 machines from the Westport area were joined by 25 mach- ines from the Rideau Ridge Riders of Portland for a Bingo Rally. The trail had to be contained on the lakes Such as the Upper Rideau and Newboro Lake, but the weather was perfect and every- one enjoyed the scenic ride.
