Juniors had their first day on the 9th, and, because of a high enrolment, seniors had a staggered start - September 8th and 10th. The first parents' meeting was held on September 8th at the school, at which time teacher Heather Green introduced and welcomed her new assistant, Susan Machan. President Jo Shaw explained the purpose of the regular parents' meetings and welcomed newcomers. Hrs. Green outlined her plans for ,the month with areas of concentration as follows: - Sept. 3 - 12 - getting to know each other and school play areas. - Myself & other people mfldng flmdly scrapbooks. Parents meetings will be held regularly on the second Monday of each month at 8:00 Pom. at the nursery school, except for the Annual General meeting which will be held Monday, October 6th at 8:00 p.m. I (as the following Monday is Thanksgiving.) It's back to work after the summer break. It seems that everyone is fit as a fiddle and ready to go. The monthly meeting held on Sept. 4th, disposed of a lot of paper that had accumulated over the holidays. The'hnnwerxzspiritlmd camyfizuptum at the instigation of Comrade Lou Mitchell a donation to the Terry Fox Fund of $50.00 was authorized. Plans were discussed for the upcoming events. Legion week was bserved all across Canada from Sept. 1 -20, 1980. Zone o 2 (Leeds County) kicked.off the activities with a church parade at Mallorytown on Sunday, Sept. 14th. The various branches in the zone held an activity. Rideau Lakes Branch No. 231 held its second annual "Open House” at the Portland Community Hall on Monday, Sept. 15th. A number of "Top Notch” entertainers were on hand. The feature attraction being Dusty King and Margriet Bakker who thrilled the receptive audience with music and song throughout the evening. Truly a professional performance. Rick Bakker and Ronny Sly came on in relief with a sound per- formance. And Terry Sled with daughters Lisa and Elaine earned a fine round of applause for their selections. Comrade Linton McConville acted as Master of Ceremonies. He extended a special thanks and appreciation to the performers. A few special guests were on hand including: - Mr. and Mrs. C. Kramer from British Columbia and Mr. and Mrs. Bill from Scotland, who were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Don Dunkeld. The Ladies' Auxiliary provided a super lunch. A good time was had by all. The Annual Harvest Ball will be held in the Portland Community Hall on Saturday, October 18th. See you all there. Plans are well advanced for the annual Remembrance Day services at Portland and Elgin on Sunday, November 9th. More details next month.
