RIDEAU COUNTRY CANOE MARATHON Despite high winds on Saturday the 16th, sponsors of the 2nd Annual Rideau Country Canoe Marathon consid- er the event a success. Not enough registrations were re- ceived for the 20 mile course, so all paddlers were lumped into one class â€" the 8 mile race. Eleven teams fought their way up Opinicon Lake against high winds to Chaffey's Lock, where all partici- pants were required to "ring the bell" before returning to the finish at Skycroft Camp. The winning team of Michael Johnstone (16) of Ottawa and Ken Agnew of Bloomington, Indiana com- pleted the course in 93 minutes. Second place honours went to Bill Truesdell (27) and Sandra Hardy (26), both of Kingston, who finished the course with a time of 100 minutes, 22 seconds. Third place went to Benny Howard (16) of Stirling and Louis Hebert (15) of Belleville with a time of 110 minutes, 2 seconds. Event organizer, Greg Derbyshire states that this year's turnout of 11 canoes is a great improvement over last year's 4 teams. Approximately 25 - 30 spectators watched the exciting mass start at Skycroft's waterfront, and 11 volun- teers ensured the safe running of the Marathon.
