’i980 SUNDAY SCHOOL'S 200th YEAR An important part of many .of our North Leeds communities ris the village Sunday School. -Few of us realize that this ,institution is as old as it actually is. The following article selected from informs atiOn distributed by the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada tells us how it all began. Robert Raikes (1735-1811) ...was a well-to-do newspaper publisher and printer in Gloucester, England. He carried a burden for the poor children of his city who laboured long hours, six days a week in factories and mills ,with no opportunity for an education. . ... In 1780, Raikes decided to open a school on Sundays to teach these poor children _reading, writing, arithmetic, land religion. Sunday was the gonly day factories and mills ‘were closed.... , (His)...purpose was two fold; spiritual and societal. The poor would receive religious instruction and fundamental educatiOn; therefore becoming better citizens and Christians. He also believed that keeping children off the streets on Sunday would improve society. Raikes idea of teaching the poor spread rapidly. Six years after he opened his first Sunday School, there were 200,000 children enrolled in Sunday Schools in England. Before he died in 1811, his system had spread throughout 'England and eventually around the world. 1 Does your child attend -Sunday School? ?? A liance Problems ?? Some time earlier Mrs. Marilyn Jeffs made a rug or wall hanging and donated it to the Sunday School. The pupils sold tickets on this and it had been decided to have the draw at the time of the picnic. Rev. Don Bailey made the draw. The lucky winner was Mrs. Audrey Welch of R.R. 2, Lyndhurst. We would like to thank everyone who helped sell tickets, those who bought them, and to Marilyn for making the mat in support of our Sunday School. LYNDHURST U.C.\N.
