'I I I I I I I I I I I I I I l I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I 1 page 13 SCHOOL ' NIGHT SCHOOL Tutorial Studies Secondary School Credit Courses THE CREDIT SYSTEM: Students need a minimum of 27 credits to complete the requirements for an Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma and a minimum of 6 additional credits for an Honour Graduation Diploma. Adults wishing to complete requirements for these diplomas may do so by attending evening or day school claSSes. or by independent study programmes. Mature students may qualify for a Secondary School Graduation Diploma with less than 27 formal secondary school credits under the special conditions outlined under Equivalent Credits for Mature Students (below). INDEPENDENT STUDY Independent study programmes are available to adults for courses at all grade levels. Participants will be provided with course outlines and assignments. There will be regular meetings with the supervising teachers to discuss course content and progress. The FALL'8O semester will offer courses in English. Mathematics, History and Science. EQUIVALENT CREDITS FOR MATURE STUDENTS A mature student is defined as a person who is at least 18 years of age and who has been out of school for at least one full year. The Ministry of Education now permits a board of education to allow credits for certain courses not normally identified with secondary education, for authorized apprenticeship programmes and for experience acquired in the adult world that can be equated as equivalent to that which might have been gained through formal education. The case of each mature student is considered individually and prospective candidates should be ready to provide transcripts from former day schools or evening classes and letters from employers and other sources which may support requests for equivalency and maturity credits.
