COLUMBANUS CATHOLIC AWOMEN'S LEAGUE ‘.(E1gin & Philipsville) On Sunday, June 8th, about 50 mem- bers and guests of the Elgin and Phil- ipsville Catholic Women's League gather- ed at Hotel Kenny for the annual luncheon. Fees for the dinner were most generously donated back to the Church for the Building Fund. Father O'Neill opened the luncheon with Grace, followed by a short busi- ness meeting presided by our new President, Mrs. Liz McNamara. Our former President Theresa Vanderwerf , was presented with a past president's 1 pin. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved and the Treasurer's report followed. A motion ' was made tO'send Sister Julia Hamilton in Guatemala a donation to help the poor. Covenor’s reports were all approved and everyone was invited to a "Right to Life" meeting at Sweet's Cor- ners on June 18th at 8:00 P.M. Coffee will be served after Mass on the long weekends this summer. The ~ President discussed the National Con- vention to be held in Halifax during the Silver Jubilee Year of the C.W.L. ,we are very pleased that our Diocisan President will be attending. Mrs. Margaret Courneya gave a most interesting report on the Diocisan Convention in Brockville. She re- minded us about the Provincial Con- vention to be held in Peterborough July l-Sth. The meeting.closed with the League Prayer. The President introduced our guest speaker Mr. Keith Dewar of Parks Can- ada. He gave an historic account of the Rideau Canal. The setting was per- fect as we were all enjoying the picturesque view of the locks while ‘he spoke. Keith was wearing one of the uniforms soldiers were during the period the locks were built. He depicted the history of the building of the canal explaining the many hardships and deaths the builders had to endure. Mr. Redpath, Mr. Sweeny and Colonel By figured most prominently in the building of the canal. He dis- played the interesting items that were rationed to the soldiers. Keith inter- jected many humerous touches through- lout his talk, and then led a panorami< Ewalking tour of Jones Falls explaining ‘much more about the history of the area. We were treated to a preview of the Blacksmith's Shop opening this year and had an enjoyable talk with the young blacksmith. Mr. Dewar described the many improvements being made to help the handicapped and eld- gerly view and learn about the history 30f the canal at Jones Falls. “â€" The best way to forget your own prob- lems is to help someone else solve theirs. Mrs. Teeple gave a vote of thanks to the pupils and their teacher. It was with regret we learned of the resignation of our President, John Hughson. He certainly will be missed. The members of our club want to thank him for the excellent way in which he managed the club while in office. Mrs. Edith Teepell was nominated to fill his vacancy for the present time. ‘ The meeting was opened by singing 0 Canada and Eliza Gray presided at the piano. A letter was read from the South Crosby Township Volunteer Fire Depart- ment regards a donation towards assis- tance in purchasing the "Marshall Rescue Tool", a safety factor in removing a trapped person. It was moved by Daisy Coon and seconded by Mrs. Roberts that we donate One Hundred dollars (100.00) towards this request. Mrs. Edith Teepell spoke of several trips we could include in our summer schedule instead of our regular meetings in July and August. This will be brought up at the next meeting. The Treasurer's report was read by Eliza Gray. Arrangements were finalized for a picnic at Kendrick Park during Senior Citizen's week of June 16th to let. This was an invitation from Seeley's Bay to join them at the Park on June 17th. A letter was received from Mrs. M. Feeney inviting members to attend the Rally of Zone 20 South, during Cardinal's Centennial Celebration June let. Several members were interested and will be going by bus with other members from Westport, Newboro and Portland. OUR NEXT DEADLINE IS AUGUST ISTI ‘ nmmmwwm mm J CANADIAN CANCER SOCIETY-RIDEAU BRANCH Although the final results of the 1980 campaign are not yet available, to date we have brought in $4212.20. We are hopeful that when all results are in, we will have reached our goal of $4500. The executive would like to thank all those people who gave of their time and money. The chairpeople in charge of the various areas were as follows: Mr Edgar Connell, Mrs. Joan Blair, Mrs. Joan McCann, Mrs. Carolyn Visser, Mrs. Jean Robertson, Mrs. Betty Davison, and Marlene Gratton. The Beta Sigma Phi sorority brought in $200 in the sale of daffodils this year and from reports, they hope to do even better next year. At a recent District Meeting in Kingston, our Education Chairman, Chris Landon, was elected District Chairman of the Quinte-Thousand Island District.
