SWEETS CORNERS On May 2i, a retirement party was held to honour Mrs. Gladys Holder, Senior Special Ed. teacher at S.C.E.S., who will be retiring this year after 25 years of teaching. The delicious roast beef dinner at the Hotel Kenney, Jones' Falls, was attended by members of Mrs. Holder's family, Joan and Arnold Gamble, her daughter and son-in-law, and Carl, her husband. Her son, Gary from Dowling,was unable to attend. Also present were several of her former Junior and intermediate classes were involved in Junior Olympics Day on Thursday, May 22. Winners in various events were as follows: A Division: BO 5 - David Hudson (13 yrs 8 ovePYEirls - Nancy Tackerer B Division: Bo s - Cameron Mainse Girls - Evelyn Scheitrowsky, Lisa Wright (tied) C Division: figys - Shawn Howard Girls - Michelle Afigenent All students participating are to be commended for their effort and sportsmanship. Gladys was presented with a gift of jewellery from the staff and a book of memories made by some of the Special Ed. team. Both Mr. Leeson and Mr. Eyre spoke highly of Mrs. Holder's dedication, flexibility and spirit and all present wished her well in the years to come. A sing-song concluded the evening, with Mrs. Jolene Hopwood accompanying on the piano, the singing of several “oldies and goodies“. Mrs. Holder was also honoured by the local association of F.W.T.A.O. at a dinner in Brockville. Many of her friends and fellow staff members were present for the occasion on May 27. We would like to congratulate this years Boys' School Baseball team for winning the North Leeds Elementary School Baseball Tournament on Thursday, May l5. REMOD LING Approximately #9 students and Supervisors set off on a recent sunny Saturday morning on the first leg of an overnight Canoe trip, under the leadership of Mr. Len Vincent, Phys. Ed. teacher. The group left the public dock in Seeley's Bay at 9:30 a.m., paddling across Whitefish Lake to Dean's island for lunch and setting up camp on the property of John and Cathy Mainse at Morton. The evening was spent in campfire activities, games and songs with several parents visiting the campers for a while. During the night heavy rain began which continued throughout Sunday morning,forcing cancellation of the remainder of the trip.
