BETA SIGMA PHI FOUNDER'S DAY This year, the 49th birthday of this service, social and cultural organi- zation was celebrated by 11 area chap- ters at the Rideau Ferry Inn. Eta Tau Chapter of Portland-Elginâ€" Westport hosted the event which was attended by 150 members from Ganan- oque, Brockville, Prescott, Kemptville and North Gower. Using the "Around The World" theme, each member of the hosting chapter wore the costume of a different country. 17 countries were represented by a hostess at each table. Girl of the year awards were pre- sented and highlights of the year were read by a representative from each group. Miss Anna Ferguson of Smiths Falls shared some of her very interesting experiences enjoyed during her many travels around the world. She com- pared places of interest in our own locale to those of great interest in other countries. Teal Renals, a talented young Perth folk singer, accompanied herself on the guitar while singing several songs writâ€" ten to or for women. The Hawaiian-Tahitian dance group, coached by Mrs. Yollanda Dallyns, high- lighted the evening. As the beautiful music played in the background, one could almost imagine sitting on the shores of the South Pacific rather than the Big Rideau Lake. Mrs. Dallyns was accompanied by Darla Wilson, Jane Paul and Judy Reid, all of Kingston. Mrs. Barb Purdy of Elgin co-ordinated the event which was hosted in the Rideau Lakes area for the first time. Eta Tau's first meeting of May was held at the home of Barb Bakker. A thank you note was read from the North Leeds Senior Ringette Team for their new shirts. Election of officers for the 1980-81 year were held and are as follows: President - Barb Bakker, Viceâ€"president- Helen McEwen, Recording Secretary - Jan Haskin, Corresponding secretary â€" Judy Horsfall, Treasurer - Ruth Pedherney, Historian - Marilyn Sheldon, Commfltees were also selected for the coming year. Social - Sharon Horsefield, Ways and Means â€" Nancy Sheffield and Marie Sharp, Service - Carolyn McPherson, and Proâ€" gram â€" Barb Purdy. Marion McLeod's program was on "Com- munication". She had us use certain words - it, you, we,to begin each sen- tence while trying to talk to a partner. We found this way of communicating preâ€" vented an interchange of conversation. The traditional end of the year box lunch was held at Ruth Pedherney's. Barb Bakker, president, presented Barb Purdy with a yellow rose for a terrific job done in organizing our Founder's Day dinner. Guest for the evening was Dahl Renals,; a well known artist from Perth. Dahl and Ruth chose "The Artist" and "Cre- ator and Receivers" as their topics for our program. Food for thought was provided from Naomi Goldburg's book "Changing of the Gods".
