Much of the meeting was spent making plans for the lunch room at the Rideau Crafts Christmas Market. Ways and Means Chairman, Nancy Sheffield, headed the dis- cussion. The menu was finalized, having made a few minor changes. A decorating committee was formed to take charge of setting up the lunch room. During the formal part of our meeting)we all welcomed our new member, Kathy Arnold, by having the Pledge Ritual. Ritual of Jewels was held for Sharon Horsefield, Judy Horsfall, Nancy Sheffield, and Marilyn Sheldon. At the second meeting of Nov- ember, held at the home of Marie Sharp, Donna Hurlbut was welcomed as our guest. Members brought muffin tins for our home-baking and decorations for the lunch room at the Christmas Market. Plans were made for preparing the food as everyone offered to take part. We had an interesting and "crafty" program as Barb Bakker helped each of us make marionettes. To the Constituents of Bastard &South Burgess Remembrance Day services were held~ at the Elgin and Portland Cenotaphs on Sunday, Nov. 9th with Rev H. Seeley officiating. A good number of veterans and Legion members, Elgin and Portland .Fire departments, Boy Scouts and Cubs and citizens braved the inclement weather to pay their respects to those who gave their lives on our behalf. Wreaths were laid and the Last Post sounded by a bugler from the Brockville Rifles. Following the ceremonies a reception was held in the Portland Community Hall. A lunch was provided by the Legion Ladies Auxiliary. ' A service was held at the Newboro . Cenotaph on Nov. 11th, with Rev. J.R. Uttley officiating. Again, a good number braved the inclement weather to pay their respects. Wreaths from the village of Newboro and the Legion were laid. An executive meeting was held at the home of our President, Comrade Floris Bakker on Nov. 20th. There was good discussion on many subjects and recommendations will be presented at the December meeting. Coming up in December is the month- ly meeting on Thursday, Dec. 4th. A small party is planned following the meeting. The usual Tuesday night bingos with a ham bingo on Dec. 9th, will continue. Members are reminded that annual dues may be paid at any time. As this will be the last report before Christmas, we wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New I WOULD LIKE TO Sincerely Thank You FOR THE SUPPORT WHICH YOU HAVE GIVEN ME IN OUR RECENT MUNICIPAL ELECTION. Bastard and South Burgess, and monies from the hall board. The Portland hall board is composed of representatives from various organizations which make use of the facilities of the hall. One of the major fundraising events for the hall board is the upcoming New Year's Eve dance. The tickets are on sale at the Royal Bank, Portland and C. Good's store - $7.00 per person prior to Dec. 30, and $16.00 per couple at the door. SOLAR ENERGY AT RIDEAU CENTENNIAL As part of a study on Canada's preâ€" sent and future energy needs, models of solar houses were constructed by the Grade 7 and 8 students. Testing of these buildings outside proved that it is possible, using only heat from the sun, to obtain extremely warm buildings. All houses reached com- fortable temperatures (20 degrees celsius) while the temperature in one house rose to over 60 degrees celsius. On Friday, Nov. 21, Mr. John McManus, brought a commercial solar collector to school for us to test. After being in the sun for only 45 minutes, the water temperature rose from 6 degrees Celsius to 51 deg. Celsius. A problem with solar heating in Canada then became evident, when the day became cloudy and the sun did not shine for the next three days. We intend to do further testing of our solar collectors, especially on some very cold winter days. JOHN FIRTH ROYAL CANADIAN LEGIQN RIDEAU LAKES (ONT 231) BRANCH The monthly meeting was held at the Portland Community Hall on Thursday, Nov. 6. The meeting was devoted mostly to arrangements for the Remembrance Day services. Following the meeting the Legion again sponsored a candidates night. The object of this event.is to pro- vide a media whereby citizens have the opportunity to see and hear all the candidates in the municipal election. A good crowd was on hand and the interest was high. Comrade Pat McManus did his usual good job as chairman. Incumbent Reeve Fred Lake and Reeve Elect Goodson Mattice brought greetings and good wishes from the Municipality of Bastard and South Burgess. They thanked the Legion for sponsoring the evening and wished all the candidates well. Two candidates for Deputy Reeve, Ross Bell and Arch Ostrom were first to be heard. Five candidates for councillors were John Firth, Portland; Len Morris, Chantry; Ray Niblock, Delta; Tom Scovil, Portland and Jim White, Delta. All candidates gave a good account of themselves and were well received. A good number of questions were field- ed with all candidates getting in- volved. It was considered to be a good evening and something that should be repeated before each election. Of course, the results of the election are now history. We wish the success- ful candidates the very best in all their endeavours. mxmsmzp ~;U]3>[â€"‘ m r N N u m THE PORTLAND KNUTTY KNOTTERS The Portland 4H decorating course "Your Corner of the World" began in September and finished in November.
