LEGION‘NEWS Elgin-Portland Branch #231â€"events- A fish derby was held Feb. 19/77 with Jack McLean from Portland winning first prize of $30.00. Second prize of $20.00 went to K Elliot of Ottawa. The annual winter dance was well attended, held at the Portland Community Hall, Feb. 26/77. Door prizes of a book of Wintario tickets were won by Mr. Lomont Brown and Mrs. Mary Shire with the 50/50 draw of $80.25 going to Mrs Chris London of Newboro. The Branch‘s annual public Speaking contest was also well attended with students from Beverly Elememtary - Deltaâ€"South Crosby-Elginâ€" Rideau Centâ€" ennialâ€"Portlandâ€"Rideau Vista. BETA SIGMA PH} Beta Sigma Phi is an interâ€" national social, cultural and service, cultural and service organization with over 250§000 active members. The sorority is not connected with any school or college; it is nonâ€"sectarian and nonâ€"political. Members are active in small chapter groups each of which plans its social, cultural and service projects to fit the interests of its own members. Area, provincial and state conventions are also planned for all sorority members to att tend and exchange ideas. Ontario Eta Tau Chapter currently has members from Elgin â€" Portlandâ€" Westportâ€" Newboro & Morton. Being only 4 yrs. old our chapter is relative by small and unâ€" known to the surrounding communities. We meet in each others homes twice monthly with the members participating in a cultural program as well as a business meeting. Although we are not aimed at being a service club most chapters raise money by various means and donate to many worthy causes, locally and internation- ally. As usual the student body of Beverley Elementary School will go down to the town hall as a group on the first day of the Festival for a pancake breakfast.
