SWEET'S CORNERS SCHOOL Falling Apart'ot the Seams? Parents at SweeEs Corners School are pressing the school Board to provide- funds for desparately needed physical repairs to the school.Tt has been estimated that $130,000 are needed. The Property Committee of the Board has recommended that $65,000 be allocated this year. This proposal has presently been sent back to the Finance Committee for study. They are to meet Jan.30. In the meantime, students and staff at the school are dealing with a dif- ficult learning environment.Shifting walls let cold air into the class- room .The floor of the kindergarten is very coldâ€"about 2°C.Ventilation is poor.Central lighting controls hinder use of films.Worse yet,the roof leaks. There are many other inadequacies in the school. There is presently no lunch room and no place for coats.Blackboards are lacking and the resource center has an extremely low ratio of books per pupil. These problems add up to a diffâ€" icult place for the children to study and learn. The basic facilities must be improved, and the money must be allocated to do it. Dr. Cathy Ashton, chairman of the School Committee, says they hope to get a firm commitment from the Board that the funds will be provided.Even if the im- provements are made over a three year period,at least they would be assured that the problems at Sweet's Corners School will not be neglected.
