RIDEAU CRAFTS SPRING FESTIVAL The weather co-operated this year for Rideau Crafts' Annual Fest- ival and Sale.An estimated 1000 families flocked to the festivit- ies at Chaffey's Locke‘strolling through the village to view the #8 boothes and displays. The hard work of organizer Mary Warren was evident in the wide variety of displays pre- sented.There was something for everyone! The crafts boothes included some excellent stained glass. much crochet and stitchery.batik. functional pottery and hand paint- ed china.High quality cibachrome photography was also displayed. For the children.there were de- lightful wooden toys by Deb & Dora Boyd of Westport. . For the lover of fine arts, there were the paintings of local artists Lawrence Hayward.E.Pinâ€" sinneaut,and E.Kirkland° The Women's Institute provid- ed tasty refreshments.Visitors could munch their goodies in the shade and enjoy a variety of en- tertainment provided outside the W.I.Hall.Among the entertainers were fiddler Roma McMillan.guitar- ists Gary Bowden and Gerry Nontell of Elgin.the South Crosby Public School Ukelele band and Common- wealth Public School Band from Brockville. An extensive historical dis- play was set up in the Lockmast- er's House by the Rideau Hist- orical Society.The Bonwills pre- sented a fascinating display of old photo albums.Because Chaffey’s Locks has been a tourist attrac- tion since its early history.many photos depicted the gracious style of turn of the century fishing and picnicing expeditionso A new addition to the Festival this year was an appropriate technology display by St. Lawrence College and Eneraction of Brock- ville.A small methane digester was on hand along with a humus toilet and a great deal of related liter- ature. Mary Warren is justifiably pleased with the success of the Festival.She comments,"It was very satisfying that so many worked so hard.I couldn't have done it with- out their helpo" Rideau Crafts is to be commended for its efforts in enriching our community life with crafts. 3. .9.
