The Canada Works program which brought us the services of our reporter,Jan Robâ€" son,is drawing to an end.The tasks of writing, typing and coâ€"ordinating the efâ€" forts of our staff will have to be tak- en up by our volunteers for the most part. This means an increased need for volun- teer help. We have never been as well staffed in the typing department as we would wish.Anyone who wouldn't mind typing a few articles each month is encouraged to volunteer their services. We have had occasion lately to exam- ine our sources of revenue, both public and private. The re8ults have caused us to question the practicality of contin- uing to mail papers in Westport and North Crosby. Those two areas account for alâ€" most 600 papers(25% of our costs),but generate very little revenue from ad- vertising. North Crosby Township Council has de- cided to discontinue their financial support of the Lantern, making matters worse and leaving us facing a losing proposition at this time. In the near future we will be making a decision whether or not to continue mailing the Lantern to these two areas. If you wish to have a voice in the deci- sion, please contact your local Lantern volunteer or Council member. In the event service is curtailed,we will attempt to make the Lantern available by subscripâ€" tion. Thereby hangs another tale.0ur initiâ€" al application for registration as sec; 0nd class mail has been rejected. We have been lumped in with fraternal, trade and professional organizations for the pur- poses of the post office act,and those groups don't qualify.Hopefully in the months to come we can sell ourselves to the mail classification people in the months to c0me,thereby cutting the cost of mailing subscriptions by over half. This is the news from Lantern head- quarters this month.Keep cards and let- ters coming;and if you can't send a card or letter, come out and lend a hand! I've thought of writing sever- al times to give you some feedback on your efforts at communicating through these pages.I think your paper is worthy of praise for its attempts at communicating local issues to local people. I believe the township councils supporting the paper are to be thanked for ensuring that we reâ€" ceive the paper. In my case.I thank the Rear of Leeds and Lansdowne for their support.Reports of coun- cil activities are to be encour- aged.Municipal government ,being front line-grass roots governâ€" ment, obviously needs the support and recognition which your paper is beginning to provide. A second issue.and one as impâ€" portant to the general reader. is currently beginning in our area.0ntario Hydro is requesting permission from landowners to spray roadsides for brush con- trol. The spray is a herbicide. 50% of which is 2-4â€"5-T accord- ing to Mr.H.Enright.Head of For- estry for Brockville Region.0nt- ario nydro. 2-4-5-T is one of the herbi- cides which breaks down into dioxin.Dioxin made headlines a while ago(via 5th Estate CBC programming) with the implica- tions that its use had negative effects on life forms.even at several parts per million con- centration. We've refused permission for Hydro to spray our property lines and would suggest other property owners consider both sides of the question before they easily agree to this spray programme. Yours sincerely. Douglas C.Green UNICEF in LEEDS 'â€"â€"â€"'â€"â€"â€"â€"â€"â€".â€"â€"â€"â€"-.â€"lâ€"’ UNICEF,the United Nation s children's fund.is organizing a committee in the County of Leeds.
