NDEAU GRAPH; Rideau Craft News This group was formed early in 1972 and includes in its membership 3 good cross section of the most energetic, informed and concerned residents of this area. The general purpose of the Association is to enrich the life of the community through crafts. From its first summer market in Crosby to its most recent festival in Chaffey's, it has been a success. The Annual Christâ€" mas markets have grown in size and quality each year and are now an eagerly awaited part of the life of the commuâ€" nity. Hundreds of people have bene- fitted from the many lectures, classes, demonstrations, sales and social events organized by the group. That is a lot for one group to do and we think that what we have done is important. If you think it's important too we need you! Come to one of our meetings and see if you would like to join. Rural Worker Sue Chamberlain The end of July marks the closure of the Rural Worker Pro- gram in North Leeds.This 2 year experiment in community educaâ€" tion by St. Lawrence College of Brockville has affected area residents in many ways.Much of the credit for the success of the program is due to the Rural Work- er,Sue Chamberlain. Drawing on her rich experience in social services and her skills in working with groups,Sue was able to effectively match com- munity needs and college reâ€" sources. Groups which gratefully acâ€" knowledge Sue's work include: the Lakeland Players,the Leeds China Painters and Rideau Crafts. Mary Warren of Rideau Crafts expresses the feelings of many who turned to Sue for advice, "Sue was effective because she was always willing to LISTEN first,and then make suggestions." Ms. Chamberlain played a key role in establishing the North Leeds'Homemaker Service.Shirley Green of the VON points out, ' "Sue's done a lot more than most people realize.She has been in- valuable in organizing the ___ Forest Fire Forest fires are not something we usually worry about. but with the recent dry spell there is rea- son for concern. On July 13. a fire started that destroyed nearly 100 acres of mixed woods between Elgin and Philipsville on land be- longing to Vince Donovan. John O'Meara. and Crown Land managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources. Volunteer fire fighters from Delta, Portland. and South Crosby were the first on the scene; fol- lowed by over 30 Natural Resources men. The major problem in fighting the blaze was getting a water sup- ply to the fireo A Delta Construc- tion bulldozer was used to make a road in on the east side where the' fire was advancing. Then fire eng- ines and tankers were brought in. Portable pumpers. backpacks, shov- els, and bags were all used to bring the fire under control. Since the fire continued to burn in dead leaves on the ground. a ditch or fire line had to be dug around the perimeter. The S.Crosby fire dept. kept men at the site for 5 days and Natural Resources men are still there a week later. The fire is believed to have been caused by lightning. 3 years lantern Profile Homemaker Training Program and obtaining the grant which got the service off the ground." Sue also provided the initiaâ€" tive and advice to form two new groups which meet important community needs:the North Leeds Lantern and the Appropriate Technology Group. Using both local and outside resources,Sue organized a series of seminars on the request of area residents.They covered such diverse topics aszwood heat,en- ergy conservation,local govern- ment,financial management for small businesses and dairy farmâ€" ing. Although the College's office in Newboro will remain open,Sue's contract is over.In August,she will turn her talents to a new job. Sue has accepted a position as a sociology instructor at St. Lawrence College's Kingston Camâ€" pus. Ms. Chamberlain is certainly to be commended for the fine job she has done as Rural Worker in North Leeds.Her presence in our area for the past two years has enriched our community life.The effects of her efforts will be felt for a long time to come. Campers are reminded that the dry organic matter on the forest floor will burn to a depth of over one foot and must be moved well away from campfires. As long as the dryness continues all open fires are very dangerous. NORTH lEEDS LANTERN ‘ With the termination of Canada Works funding this month,the Lantern is faced with increased expenses if quality is to be main- tained.The Lantern volunteers wish to continue free distribution in order to best serve our com- munity.
