NORTH LEEDS LANTERN page 11 1 Summer Grants; Experience B Service Nine local students are enjoy- ing a valuable working experience this summer thanks to three gov- ernment grants in the Elgin area. The projects are designed to pro- vide a worthwhile service to the community. ' 1.Rideau Historical Collection Serv1ce is funded by the ederal government under the Young Canada werks program.Local students Kar- en Hubel,Kathy Lyle,Kevin Young and Angela Guniwiek are hard at work completing the work begun on the project last summer.Historicâ€" al material is being compiled from every available source, from elderly residents to archives. This summer the project is fo- cusing on Portland and Newboro in the period from settlement days to 1900.The students are receiv- ing assistance in their research from Parks Canada and Ontario Heritage,as well as Mrs. H.Roberts of Westport. The community at large has been very helpful. Anyone who has not been contact- ed who has information in the form of letters, photos, maps or a family Bible,is asked to contact the project.Call Elgin Library at 359-5315. It is hoped that a booklet will be Compiled containing the students' research by the end of the summer. The information would then be avâ€" ailable at all branches of the Rideau Lakes Union Library, the sponsor of the project. The students on this project also run weekly Children's Hour programs in each Branch Library. @ 2.Rideau Lakes Union Library has also sponsored an Ex erience'78 grant from the prov1nce.Susan Keates has been hired for the summer to extend hours at Elgin Branch Library. She also assists Mrs. Little in co-ordinating the Union. 3.Another E erience'78 project was sponsored through the Board of Education. This project employs four students, Valerie Wier,Paul Chant,Elaine Galway, and Dorothy Pyenburg, to update and catalogue the library collection at Rideau District High School. This service will facilitate retrieval of mat- erial for both students and the community. OMISSION Duncan's Radio & TV carries colour and black and white televisions, radios and stereos by PANASONIC. PLANT COOLING TREES A single medium-sized tree in your yard can have the cooling effect of 600,000 BTUs of air conditioning per day. This is equivalent to about five room airâ€"conditioners running 20 hours daily. If you're lacking trees, you can out future energy bills by planting some this fall. Unfortunately, it takes time for young trees to mature. In the meantime, consider planting vines alâ€" ong your house walls, especially areas that get the full force of summer sun. Quickhgrowing vines such as Boston Ivy grow six to ten feet a year. Leaves willblock hot sun and, in addition,con- vection currents developing behind the leaves will draw warm air away from the house walls.
