Newboro News! _ Banncilsflates- The regular meeting of the Newboro Council was held in the Village Hall October 2, 1978 at 8:00 p.m. Present were D. Delaney, R.A. Taylor, E. Bresee with K. Rasmussin in the Chair. T. Landon was absent. D.S. Burtch attended the meeting for instruction. He was asked by Council to pick up all garbage at the boat houses. No further instruction was given. Jim Murphy OHRP administrator was present to have two more names approved for loans. Mrs. M. Whalen attended the meeting to ask the Council to ask the people of the Village to clean up the brush etc. in the Village. As head of the boat house association they are asking that all boat house owners do the same. On a motion by D. Delaney and R.A. Taylor the severance applications by D. Syallow were approved. on a motion by E. Bresee and D. Delaney the Council proclaimed October Library Month. On a motion by R.A. Taylor and D. Delâ€" aney we agreed to pay the sum of $180. to the North Leeds Homemakers for services from September 1 to Dec. 31, 1978. On a motion by E. Bresee and D. Delaney the Council accepted the building committee report. On a motion by R.A. Taylor and D. Delaney we approved the Road subsidy report up to September 1, 1978. On a motion by E. Bresee and R.A. Taylor we voted in favour of contacting North Crosby Township asking them to snow plow the roads for 1978-79. Bills in the amount of $1,327.96 were paid. On a motion by E. Bresee and R.A. Taylor that a letter be sent to Mr. J. Murphy stating that the building inspector inspect all OHRP buildings before they start and that 15% of the contract be held back until the build- ing inspector approves the final work. A letter is to be sent to the building inspector and the inspector is to approve this in writing to the Clerk. Motion was carried. The next council meeting is to be held Thursday, November 2, 1978. NEWBORO WOMEN'S INSTITUTE Newboro Branch was formed on June 19, 1908 but really had its beginning two years earlier when the late J.R. Darga- vel of Elgin, M.L.A. for South Leeds, sent a copy of the 1906 report of the Ontario Women's Institute to his sister Mrs. William Chamberlain. This report was read by her daughter who was imr pressed by the wonderful possibilities it opened for the educational and social development of Country Women. Mr. G.A. Putnam, Supt. of Agriculture sent out letters and asked for a meeting to be held in Newboro. A hall was secu- red and elections were held: president was Mrs. R.G. Leggett and the Sec. Treas. was Miss Helen Dargavel. The motto was "For Home and Country", the colors "Blue & Gold" and an "Ode and Creed" which is still used. Thirty ladies joined and at one time there were nine branches in Leeds North. LE GROUPE DE LA PLACE ROYALE will be performing on Nov. 6 at Sweet's Corners Public School at 11 a.m. and at Beverley Elemen- tary School at 2p.m. This group is known for its innovative work com- bining dance, drama and live music. The group performed at the National Centre, Ottawa. Open to the public. Video tapes for Hockey Coaches are aVailable at the Elgin Branch and following these will be a.series of tapes on cross country skiing. Come in and learn more about these sports. Elgin Branch is open again Thurs. 7â€"9 p.m., thanks to a new volunteer, Lorie Truemner. NEWBORO U.C.W. The Newboro U.C.W. meeting was held at the home of Mrs. D. Cheetam October 11. Mrs. Don Williams led in devotions. Subscriptions were taken by Mrs. E. Bell for the Observer. The big annual bazaar is to be held November 11th at 2:00 p.m. in the Star Hall. Mrs. Joyce Hutchings had the program which was enjoyed by all. A very nice lunch was served by the hostess and directors.
