NORTH LEEDS LANTERN Page 9 A REVIEW " The Lakeland Players. Harvey The Lakeland Players presented another delightful comedy to a full house at St. Edward's School in Westport.Their performance of the well-loved "Harvey" revealed that increased experience and con- fidence are honing the group's talents. On a simple but effectively de- signed set.the motion of the play flowed without a hitch. The pace of the play was artfully construe cted- from a slow beginning the audience was swept to the high pitch of the final sceneso Graham Baldwin gave an out- standing performance of the com- plex central character.Elwood P. Dowd.Mr. Baldwin's facility of expression and sparkling eyes worked well in portraying Dowd. an eccentric but lovable charâ€" acter whose best friend is Harvey, a large white rabbit.Dowd opens the eyes of others to the pleas- ures of fantasy. He says."I've wrestled with reality for #0 years and.I'm happy to say.I won." June Boston gave a sensitive performance of Dowd's sister.Veta Louise Simmons.Veta is a self- righteous matron who is exasper- ated by her brother's invisible friend. In desperation.she attempts to commit him to a sanitarium.How- ever, the tables are turned and she is mistakenly.if briefly.committed. The tables are similarly turned on those who work so hard to rid Dowd of his illusion. In the end. Veta's love for her brother wins out and he is accepted as he is. Those around Dowd begin to realize how fantasy can enrich life. The effectiveness of the play's delivery was enhanced by an excel- lent supporting cast.0f note was Ted Landon's portrayal of Wilson. the explosive attendant at the sanitarium. At one point Wilson shouts excitedlyh"The nerve of this guy! He couldn't come in here with an ordinary case of the D.T.s.He had to come in with a six foot rabbit!" The play's message was clear.Although a six foot rabbit is too much for most people.we can all use a little magic in our lives. Thanks to the Lakeland Players for bringing the magic of theatre to North Leeds: From the Lakeland Players production of HARVEY.
